The National Party's departure from the government leaves Inkatha hanging loose

Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi greeted the National Party's walkout from government on 9 May with the remark that he wouldn't like to 'take a cue' from the NP. During the two- year span of the Government of National Unity (GNU), his Inkatha Freedom Party has several times threatened to quit and as many times backed down. Now the Nats have beaten them to it. F .W . de Klerk' s exit speech was widely seen as a petulant response to the NP failure to safeguard 'white exclusivity' in the new constitution, notably state support for Afrikaans-medium schools. If Buthelezi followed De Klerk's lead, it would merely fuel accusations that Inkatha is a lackey of the party of apartheid.
