An emerging elite of business people and politicians is jockeying for influence and contracts

The business and political sands have shifted since President Mwai Kibaki took office in January 2003. Some loyal business retainers of the Daniel arap Moi era have been unceremoniously locked out but others have reinvented themselves and under the new order, have survived if not thrived. Still others in politics, business and the civil service see this as an opportunity to expand their political and commercial influence afresh. A new network - of ambitious, thrusting people seemingly riding high in the National Rainbow Coalition (Narc) and in league with some retreads from the Moi era - is taking shape.
