Dialogue of empty chairs

The government was again talking to itself at its National Dialogue and even Thabo Mbeki boycotted the proceedings

Only one opposition delegation – two Darfur former rebels whose security was guaranteed by Chadian President Idriss Déby Itno – were at the opening of the government's vaunted National Dialogue on 10 October. Chaired by a grim President Omer Hassan Ahmed el Beshir, the gathering was boycotted not only by the Sudanese opposition but also by the chief African Union mediator, South African ex-President Thabo Mbeki, and other AU grandees. The Sudan Call Forces (SCF) coalition had agreed to join political talks with the ruling National Congress Party but the NCP has refused to meet their conditions on human rights, security and a neutral venue, conditions the AU has accepted.
