High Court awaits Guelleh

A High Court judge in London has ordered Djibouti's President Ismail Omar Guelleh to give evidence in person next month in the increasingly fraught case between the Djibouti government and exiled businessman Abdourahman Boreh (AC Vol 56 No 10). After a pre-trial hearing with both sides' lawyers, Justice Julian Flaux dismissed the notion of Guelleh appearing via video-link from Addis Ababa. 'I will need a lot of convincing in a case where the claimant is the government of Djibouti and the principal witness is the President of Djibouti and the case made against the claimant is that their case is effectively a dishonest case… So I'm simply not prepared to countenance evidence by video-link…'
