The party rebrands for the polls

President Lungu wants to purge his party of its association with his predecessor but the plunging economy offers far bigger challenges

Under the growing influence of former President Rupiah Banda, President Edgar Lungu is turning the governing Patriotic Front away from the left-leaning legacy of the late Michael Sata. Foreign Affairs Minister Harry Kalaba, and ministers Chishimba Kambwili (Information and Broadcasting Services) and Nkandu Luo (Gender and Child Development) are increasingly seen as 'not so allies' of Lungu and are likely to be dismissed, says a senior source in the governing Patriotic Front. Kambwili, who challenged Lungu for the succession as PF leader to the late Michael Sata, is upset that former fierce critics of Sata such as Dora Siliya, who was Information Minister in ex-President Banda's Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) government, are now ensconced in the PF and taking a leading role in planning Lungu's election campaign next year.
