Lake murder mystery

Little progress has been made in the investigation into dozens of bodies found in Lake Rweru

Reports in August that dozens of bodies had been found floating in Lake Rweru on the Rwandan-Burundian border made international headlines and drew condemnation from foreign donors. Villagers in the area said the corpses first started appearing in July, with new discoveries reported through to September. The cadavers were in an advanced state of decomposition, wrapped in plastic and some with their limbs bound. Initial reports indicate that at least 49 bodies were found but nobody knows the exact number, as many were either buried by local people or washed away before they could be recovered. Their origin and identity remain unclear.
