Move closer

After allowing China to open a trade office in November, São Tomé is fending off claims that it may abandon Taiwan, its diplomatic ally

Prime Minister Gabriel Costa is walking a fine line by encouraging investment from both China and Taiwan. Chinese oil companies play a crucial role in oil exploration, but Taiwan offers a steady supply of aid, at about US$15 million per year. In late October, a government delegation – led by Foreign Minister Natalia Umbelina and including Paulo Jorge do Espírito Santo, diplomatic advisor to President Manuel Pinto da Costa, and Henrique Pinto da Costa, the President’s brother and advisor to Prime Minister Gabriel Costa – paid a quiet visit to China to negotiate a trade agreement.
