On her first state visit to Africa, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra pledged an $8 billion investment in Mozambican port and rail projects

Thailand’s Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra embarked on her maiden state visit to Africa in late July. Her first stop was Mozambique, where on 1 August she promised to make the Thai government’s largest-ever investment of US$8 billion to build a deepwater port at Macuse in Zambézia Province and connect it with a rail link to the coal mines in Tete Province. Lately, Asian companies have signed a raft of new deals in the oil, gas and mining sectors. Even the smaller Asian companies want a slice of Mozambique’s natural resource boom.
