John Forbes Kerry warned the United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee of the long-term economic cost of stagnant commercial ties with Africa shortly before his appointment as Secretary of State on 29 January. Referring to Chinese involvement in mineral extraction, he urged the US government to invest in building a long-term, private-sector presence in Africa to rival that of Asian investors. He has also spoken out against human rights violations in Sudan, South Sudan and Uganda.
