Polish to a shine

Beijing frets over the image of Chinese companies as the Zimbabwean opposition rails against more loans and Chinese diamond miners

Unionists and civil society members point to the close ties between the ruling parties of China and Zimbabwe to explain the lack of oversight of Chinese companies operating in the country. Simon Khaya Moyo, Secretary General of the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF), met with Chinese propaganda chief Li Changchun in Beijing on 29 June to congratulate the Chinese Communist Party on its 90th anniversary. Moyo called for exchange programmes to share expertise on building up the party base and managing national development. Zimbabwe’s former Ambassador to China, Chris Mutsvangwa, described China as Zimbabwe’s ‘national saviour’ and hailed its relations with Zimbabwe as ‘visionary’.
