Sino-Zimbabwe in the Marange diamond fields

The Kimberley Process suspended diamond sales from Marange in 2009 due to concerns about transparency in the production chain and the illicit activities of the security services in the region, so the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) keeps the picture of operations at the diamond fields deliberately murky. However, at a 24 February press conference in Luanda, Manuel Vicente, the Chief Executive of Sonangol, Angola’s state oil company, confirmed that China Sonangol, a joint venture between Sonangol and the China International Fund (CIF), was mining diamonds in Zimbabwe.
