The trains don't run on time

Angola's infrastructure is being given a makeover by Beijing

Relations between Angola and China are steaming ahead, despite the wishful thinking of some Western diplomats. China's Prime Minister Wen Jiabao visited Luanda on 23 June and signed an agreement for an extra credit line to fund reconstruction and development projects; Angolan sources say it will involve more than the US$2 billion oil-backed credit line extended in 2004 by China's Exim Bank. The new agreement is to finance construction of a new Luanda international airport and to continue rehabilitation of the Benguela and Namibe rail lines, and several main roads. China will also send a medical team and construct an institute of international relations in Luanda.
