Zambians' belief in the brand new Republican Party faces its first test on 26 September. By contesting seven by-elections, the party hopes to give a voice to the discontents of voters in crucial Copperbelt constituencies, especially Luanshya, the former seat of its founder, Ben Mwila, who was purged recently from the governing Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD). The Republicans, like other opposition parties, will emphasise the government's shambolic sale of the copper mines.
