Whitewashing reality

Western ambiguities on human rights policy help the Islamist regime

The high drama (and useful diversion) acted out between President Omer Hassan Ahmed el Beshir and National Islamic Front-founder Hassan Abdullah el Turabi is heating up again. It has prompted another flood of foreign media reports that the 'fall' of Turabi meant the end of the 'Islamist threat'. Turabi's noisy declarations last week that he was about to be arrested and that a 'rebellion' was imminent reminded the public that he'd conveniently found himself in gaol at President Ja'afar Nimeiri's overthrow in 1985, enabling him to distance himself from a hated government.
