Opus Dei, a secretive organisation favoured by Pope John-Paul II, hopes to sign up more followers in Africa, where only 1,500 of its 80,000 members are estimated to live. Its founder, Monsignor José Maria Escrivà de Balaguer, was born 100 years ago on 9 January 1902 and is to be canonised.
