Don't confront, co-opt

The African National Congress often deals with its opponents by co-opting them, offering jobs and a hearing in exchange for an end to opposition. Co-option began with the Government of National Unity (GNU), established under the interim constitution in 1994. Ex-President Frederik Willem de Klerk and his National Party colleagues were allotted six cabinet posts as a constitutional right on a basis of proportional representation.
