In denial

The politics and economics aren't as bad as they look, says President Gbagbo

'There is no political crisis in Côte d'Ivoire,' President Laurent Gbagbo assured diplomats and politicians on 7 September. He was inaugurating the National Reconciliation Forum, which is meant to patch up the ethnic rivalries that exploded into street battles a year ago (AC Vol 42 Nos 13 & 14). After his election last November, Gbagbo was expected to survive for days rather than months; his denial is understandable. Although he has established his personal authority, politics are still on a knife edge.
