Shame about the politics

The players are good but big problems lie at the organisational level

It took Germany's historic 7-1 defeat of Brazil on 8 July to put the disappointing performance of African teams at the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) 2014 World Cup into perspective. This was the same German team that Ghana had held to a 2-2 draw in the group stage and that Algeria had taken on in one of the most exciting matches of the tournament, only to go out with a 2-1 defeat. Although those matches proved that African teams can put on world-class performances, they still lack the consistency to get to the final.
