Regional leaders take charge

Backstage at the AU summit and increasingly worried about the state of affairs in CAR, regional leaders took some key decisions

The leaders of the Francophone Central African grouping, the Communauté économique des états de l’Afrique centrale, are demanding changes to CAR President Catherine Samba-Panza’s government. Impatient at her lack of progress after five months in power, they excluded her from the CEEAC meeting held on the sidelines of the African Union summit in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, at the end of June. While most summiteers were preoccupied by the problems of jihadism spreading in West and East Africa, Chadian President Idriss Déby Itno, as CEEAC Chairman, called the leaders together, obliging Samba-Panza to wait outside the room for all but five minutes of the meeting.
