Sata speculation grows

Concern is growing for the President’s health and also for the impact on his party should he leave office prematurely

President Michael Sata's office announced on 22 June that he had flown to Israel for a 'working holiday', including meetings with President Shimon Peres. Yet Israeli media reported that Peres was due in Washington this week and made no mention of any meeting with the Zambian President. Sata's main purpose is medical treatment, say our sources in Lusaka. Until his return, he has made Wynter Kabimba, the controversial Secretary General of the governing Patriotic Front (PF) and Justice Minister, Acting President. Persistent reports of Sata's treatment in Britain and India for what is believed to be prostate cancer have never been confirmed. However, Sata left Zambia on the Presidential Challenger business jet in the evening of 20 June in the company of his Spokesperson George Chellah, his wife Christine Kaseba and his personal physicians.
