Cairo leans on Khartoum

Tension is still rising between Khartoum and Cairo as Egypt's new leader President Abdel Fatah Khalil el Sisi sets out his strategic priorities. Top of the list is shutting down the domestic and regional networks of the now banned Muslim Brotherhood, which ran the government until it was ousted by El Sisi and the military last July. The conviction of Egypt's security services and others that Sudan provides a critical rear base for the Brothers has undermined the usual functional relations between the neighbours.
