The end of the beginning

President Salva Kiir and his former Deputy, Riek Machar, have agreed to an interim government but its shape is far from clear

Mediators in Addis Ababa studiously played down the fact that the cessation of hostilities agreement signed on 9 May was not the result of face-to-face talks between South Sudan's rival leaders. Instead, the accord took weeks of negotiation by their representatives, themselves powerful politicians. The two men who bear greatest responsibility for the conflict, President Salva Kiir Mayardit and former Vice-President, Riek Machar Teny Dhurgon, held only proximity talks. Photographs of the pair exchanging documents at the end spoke volumes.
