The government's friends will win the elections but militias are profilerating

With all the country's leading legal opposition parties committed to participating in general elections on 5 June, a constitution in place which gives the presidency scope to control an elected legislature and signs of an upturn in the economy, President Lamine Zeroual and his allies feel more comfortable than ever as they hold on to power in Algiers. The presidency reckons that its party, the Rassemblement National Démocratique (RND) will poll at least 35 per cent of the vote next month. Yet daily violence continues to traumatise Algeria.
