Nouveaux venus

The Parti Socialiste victory in France's general elections of 25 May and 1 June gave heart to opposition parties in Francophone countries whose leaders are close to French politicians of Gaullist tradition. After Mobutu Sese Seko's fall, opposition politicians in Africa are looking for more weakening of the old guard as Lionel Jospin's government bends to regional geopolitical changes, with the United States and South Africa emerging with bigger roles.
