And across the river

Within weeks of Mobutu's fall, Brazzaville erupts on the other side of the Congo River

None of the protagonists emerge with any credit from the murderous struggle for power in Brazzaville. The fighting precedes the presidential election, which President Pascal Lissouba still insists will take place on 27 July. This allowed the third presidential contender, Brazzaville Mayor Bernard Kolélas, to stake his claim by heading a National Mediation Committee, which has at least brought the warring factions – one supporting Lissouba, the other, General Denis Sassou Nguesso – into ceasefire talks.
