Cairo's round

Somali faction leaders have been meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, this week to try to salvage the agreement reached in Cairo on 22 December. Signatories to the Egyptian- sponsored peace accord (providing for a ceasefire in Mogadishu, a federal state, a three- year transitional government and a national reconciliation conference in the southern town of Baidoa in February) included self-proclaimed presidents Hussein 'Aydeed' and Ali Mahdi Mohamed, the major Hawiye faction-leaders in Mogadishu.
