Curbing the press

Security officials around President Lansana Conté are cracking down ahead of the presidential election scheduled for December, when their man and his Parti de l’ Unité et du Progrès are the front runners. General Conté's military retinue has been targeting journalists working for the small but effective private press. Foday Fofana, the BBC correspondent and a journalist with the Conakry weekly, L’Indépendant, was unceremoniously dumped over the Sierra Leone border on 7 January, having been held since 13 October on violation of state security charges. Lieutenant Colonel Sama P. Bangoura arrested him at Conakry's Alpha Yaya military camp and later handed him to the Direction de la Surveillance du Territoire for interrogation.
