Deepening divisions among the armed groups – and the heavy hand of IBK – undermine the chances for talks on peace in the north

Swept to power on a nationalist platform in elections last September, President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta intends to make peace on his own terms or not at all. That was the clear message ahead of talks between the armed groups from northern Mali, the government and United Nations officials in Bamako on 13-14 March. The aim on paper was to revive the stuttering peace process. Jihadist groups have stepped up operations since January, underlining the importance of a swift and durable resolution to the crisis in the north of the country.
