Mid-term blues

The President’s final term of office is half-way through: it is a time of uncertainty, realignment and anxious looks towards the future

The rumour which flashed around Monrovia late last year that President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf had died was a harbinger of unsettled times ahead. As she reaches the midpoint in her last presidential term, a host of political challenges loom (AC Vol 54 No 22, Feted and berated). The main event will be October’s senatorial elections, when half of the 30 senators will seek re-election. including convicted ex-President Charles Taylor’s former ally, Prince Yormie Johnson, in Nimba County.
