Luanda shouts back at Lisbon

A government newspaper calls Portugal corrupt and ignorant after it starts an investigation into allies of Dos Santos for financial crimes

Reports of criminal investigations in Portugal into Angolan money-laundering have angered President José Eduardo dos Santos. Relations between the two countries were ‘not well’, he said last month. The government’s mouthpiece, the Jornal de Angola, was less guarded, calling the Portuguese elite ‘corrupt’ and ‘ignorant’ in a series of editorials accusing its former colonial power of being a ‘failed democracy’ where children were going hungry and infant mortality rates were rising dangerously. Portuguese ministers are playing down the affair and insisting that a bilateral summit scheduled for next February will still go ahead. Angola says it is cancelled.
