Rebels with many causes

A highly diverse alliance of interest groups and political forces came together to oust the Muslim Brotherhood from power but how long can the coalition last?

Finding the right term to describe what happened in Egypt between 30 June and 3 July is a politically-loaded challenge. The fact that the army decreed the end of the rule of President Mohammed Mursi, detained him and shot dead dozens of his supporters, gave the events all the hallmarks of a military coup. Yet that term offends the activists who launched the petition to impeach President Mursi and who claim the credit for inspiring millions of Egyptians to come out on 30 June to drive home the message that he had to stand down or be forcibly removed.
