Justice may have to wait

The government claims it treats both sides’ atrocities in the recent fighting even-handedly – it may prefer to let the reconciliation process slide

Militia leader Amadé Ouérémi has handed himself in for trial for the worst massacre of the 2010-11 post-election crisis, the slaughter of 3,000 people at Duékoué in March 2011. His negotiated surrender on 18 May has succeeded only in highlighting the scale of the obstacles to reconciliation. Ouérémi was allied to the Forces républicaines de Côte d’Ivoire, which backed Alassane Dramane Ouattara. The FRCI were the new model of the former Forces nouvelles (FN) rebels from the north. Ouérémi is the first person from that side of the conflict to be held to account.
