The once prestigious Harare Annual Agricultural Show, a shadow of its former self, gamely goes through the motions of being opened by an international figure. On 24 August, this honour fell to Lesotho’s Prime Minister, Motsoahae Thomas Thabane, and he made a fulsome speech in praise of his host, President Robert Mugabe. The experienced listener, however, could also discern a few digs, including references to Mugabe’s future role as a retired Southern African Development Community (SADC) statesman and to the importance of expanding food production.
