Making calls on the state

Observers are asking if a crackdown on a telecoms scandal signals a new approach to corruption

In a fit of unusual state zeal on 2 August, police in Bangui arrested a Frenchman working for local telecommunications company Telsoft Gateway Centrafrique and charged him with diverting money due to the Treasury. The arrest is part of a tortuous tale involving two former Post and Telecommunications ministers, Fidèle Ngouandjika and Thierry Savanarole Maléyombo, and investigations into their activities by their successor, Abdou Karim Meckassoua.
