The next Zeroual

Liamine Zeroual’s decision to stand down as President on 11 September followed months of establishment infighting, reflected in a bitter and unprecedented press campaign against his close ally, Minister Counsellor Mohamed Betchine (AC Vol 39 No 18). The presidential clan fought back. Yet for all the government’s claims to be winning the war against underground Islamist militias, the Zeroual- Betchine axis was under greater pressure than ever as rival clans vied for power and the establishment was again divided over strategy amid the one-year-old ceasefire by the Armée Islamique du Salut.
