Winners of the wave

With two autocrats felled in less than a month, the big winner in North Africa’s democracy wave is clearly people power, previously a rarity on the streets of Tunis and Cairo, and indeed other North African cities. It is the nature – young, pro-democracy and politically secular – of that power that will prove important in the weeks to come, both for the progress of the political transitions in Egypt and Tunisia, and also as object lessons to new political movements in the rest of Africa and the Middle East.
