Bayelsa's fighting chance

Rivalry between two former loyalists of President Goodluck Jonathan and his People's Democratic Party in his home state of Bayelsa presages fierce confrontations before April's elections. The split in the Bayelsa PDP began with the defection of Ndutimi Alaibe, former Special Advisor to the President on Niger Delta Affairs and manager of the amnesty programme; he is now standing for Governor for the Labour Party (LP). Alaibe was heir-apparent to Jonathan's governorship in Bayelsa but the present Governor, Chief Timipre Sylva, pipped him for the PDP candidacy in 2007.
