Khartoum’s deadly bombardment of a border village shows growing desperation at the prospects of Southern succession next year

Three weeks before the referendum on Southern Sudan, it is clear that the scheduled simultaneous vote on the Abyei area’s future will not go ahead on 9 January. This is a significant victory for the ruling National Congress Party’s confrontation with the Government of South Sudan (GOSS). The NCP (aka National Islamic Front) knows the row over Abyei – and the still undemarcated North-South border that stretches to its east and west – provides plenty of political and military scope.
