Is Colonel Massi dead?

After weeks of speculation, the wife and political allies of politician-turned-rebel leader Colonel Charles Massi, 57, are convinced he is dead, on the instructions of Central African Republic President François Bozizé. They say he perished in Bossembélé, north-west of Bangui, on 8 January after sustained torture. The government had denied any knowledge of Massi's detention but the affair has still embarrassed CAR: it coincided with the Communauté Economique et Monétaire de l'Afrique Centrale summit in Bangui and with renewed concern about Bozizé's willingness to hold scheduled elections this year.
