Lining up the Mills team

The economy is the new President's first concern but politics drives many of his appointments

Three weeks after being sworn in as President in succession to John Agyekum Kufuor, Professor John Evans Atta Mills has completed his cabinet line-up and set about formulating an economic blueprint which he hopes will last throughout his four-year term. Mills won by just 40,000 of some 9 million votes cast. Yet, despite concern about the influence of ex-President Jerry John Rawlings, founder of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), the new President's appointments suggest a firm grip on the economy and the desire to manage the government's day-to-day business. Confirmation of the appointments depends on parliamentary scrutiny, starting on 6 February.
