Three months after his tiny election win, President Banda finds his country running out of money and jobs

The slide in the world price of Zambia's main export, copper, from US$8,000 to $4,000 a tonne over the past year casts a shadow over economic and political prospects (AC Vol 49 No 23 & Vol 50 No 1). Falling state revenue will make governing even tougher for President Rupiah Banda, who won October's election by just over 25,000 votes and presides over the fractious Movement for Multiparty Democracy.
