Mugabe, Tsvangirai and Mutambara have signed the power-sharing agreement but can it really work?

Amid the euphoria and impeccably presented theatre of the signing of the Zimbabwe power-sharing agreement on 15 September, only a Jeremiah would have warned that Monday’s child is full of woe. The stocks were being sold (Old Mutual tumbled by two-thirds, helped by their United States problems), the press was squared (even Zimbabwe’s state-owned media tried to be even-handed), and the middle classes and the regional diplomats were quite prepared. By Tuesday, after the departure of the king and presidents, it was clear that the child still had far to go.
