Sierra Leone

A rare soldiering success

Security in Sierra Leone has been managed much better than the economy and politics. A British-led international training team has sharply improved the professionalism and dependability of the 10,500-strong army, and helped integrate former rebels and other fighters into its ranks since 2002. But security during the elections, including at polling booths, will be maintained by the 9,500-strong police force.
