After arresting his rivals, Saïed will run for another presidential term

The regime’s descent into autocracy and brutalisation of migrants, raises more questions for its European backers

A day after German Chrisitian Democrat Ursula von der Leyen secured her second term as President of the European Commission on 18 July, one of her closest partners in Africa, Tunisia’s president Kaïs Saïed announced he would be running for another term in presidential elections on 6 October. The deepening political crisis in Tunisia, in which Saïed has taken apart the independent justice system and is tilting towards Iran and Russia, will be one of Von der Leyen’s first foreign policy problems. She won her election claiming to have pioneered a workable, if unethical, response to the EU’s attempts to control migration across the Mediterranean.
