Faure's French friends

West African presidents and the Elysée Palace endorse Gnassingbé's election

The army had crushed the opposition uprising and the Constitutional Court had rejected claims of electoral irregularities well before Faure Gnassingbé was sworn in on 4 May. Hospital sources reported tens of civilians killed, many by gunfire; United Nations officials said 16,000 people had fled to Benin and Ghana. Western diplomats, led by Germany and the United States, said that Emmanuel Bob Akitani, the aged opposition candidate fronting a six-party coalition, would have won a free and fair election. France disagreed.
