Rival candidates stoke divisive rhetoric over anti-gay law

Voters worry about the economy and insecurity but the presidential frontrunners focus on same-sex relationships

Mahamudu Bawumia, presidential candidate for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and John Dramani Mahama, his rival and candidate for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) agree on one thing – that citing scriptures to justify opposition to same sex relationships is a vote-winner. But neither candidate is prepared to say whether they support a draconian anti-LGBTQ+ bill which would punish homosexual acts with a three-year prison term and compel citizens to report people in same-sex relationships to the authorities.
