Friends fall out

A former business ally of the Mugabe government accuses it of corruption and hypocrisy

The last shreds of credibility of President Robert Mugabe's government are at stake in a war of words between businessman Mutumwa Mawere and Reserve Bank Governor Gideon Gono. The row is symptomatic of the splintering of the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front, divided on policy and the succession to 81-year-old Mugabe. The row revolves around a key issue in the run-up to elections on 31 March: the government's declared anti-corruption campaign. Governor Gono has been leading that campaign for the government and his dogged pursuit of businesses breaking Zimbabwe's foreign exchange laws has made him many enemies.
