Elections and bust

The country goes to the polls in December but the organisation of the vote doesn’t promise improved accountability

At the end of the year citizens are supposed to cast their votes for a new parliament and a new president. An atmosphere of indifference pervades most circles, but there is excitement among the urban elite as rumours fly about the amount of money changing hands as they speculate on which politicians will shift from opposition to the side of the incumbent, President Faustin-Archange Touadéra. The past four years have seen ample funding for government, but few real achievements. The international community has been attracting increasing criticism for over-generosity in endowing political institutions while turning a blind eye to corruption.
