Ruto-Raila (round one)

The by-election campaigns for Kibra (previously Kibera), Kenya's largest slum, near downtown Nairobi, turned into a full-dress rehearsal of the political contest between Deputy President William Ruto and former opposition leader Raila Odinga. Both are expected to contest the presidency in 2022, and are campaigning vigorously for their party's candidate in the seat, respectively Jubilee's McDonald Mariga, a Luhya, and the Orange Democratic Movement's Bernard 'Imran' Okoth. Okoth's main claim to the seat, which was represented by Odinga for 20 years, is that it was occupied by his brother Ken Okoth, who died from cancer in July.
