Lining up for battle

Falling support for the President’s party in local elections is a foretaste of the national vote in 2020

The ruling party could only count on mixed results in the just-ended regional and local elections, held on 13 October. President Alassane Dramane Ouattara's Rassemblement des houphouëtistes pour la démocratie et la paix (RHDP) secured 60% of the 30 Regional Councils – a layer of government between the larger districts and the smaller departments created in 2011 – but only a disappointing 46% in the municipal elections, the lowest administrative level for which elections are held.
